Outdoor Living Areas
by Robin Fowler

Chances are if you own a vacation rental home, it is in an excellent location for enjoying the great outdoors. Otherwise, why would folks want to vacation there? Whether it’s at the beach, overlooking a beautiful mountain range, or in a verdant forest, your renters will appreciate the availability of areas outside their vacation rental home that allow them to enjoy all that Mother Nature has to offer.

Extending the living areas of your vacation rental home make the idea of choosing your home over a hotel or resort that much more enticing to potential renters. There are several very easy things to do that will not only make your vacation rental home more valuable to you, but more valuable to renters, which will reap you huge dividends!

Equip your vacation rental home with a comfortable deck or patio area, so that guests can watch the sun rise or set, or eat meals out in the mountain air or sea breeze. Depending on the size of the deck or patio, provide plenty of good quality patio furniture, such as comfortable chairs, chaise lounges, and a table for dining or playing games.

What deck or patio would be complete without a grill for fun family barbecues? This is an excellent amenity to consider adding to your vacation home that renters will love and appreciate. You can purchase either a charcoal or gas grill for relatively little money. If you opt for a charcoal grill, keep the house stocked with charcoal and matches, and if you opt for gas, make sure that your guests know where they can refill the gas tank if they need to.

If your vacation rental home has a lawn, make sure that you keep it mowed regularly. You will likely be able to find a lawn service in the area that can keep the yard in fighting form year-round, so that your renters can play yard games, picnic, or just relax on the grass. In fact, it’s not a bad idea to equip the house with some lawn games, like volleyball, badminton, croquet, and a few balls!

If your vacation home is equipped with a garage, attached or detached, this is the perfect place to provide extra storage areas for your renters. Add some inexpensive cabinets or shelving, so that guests can store their luggage and gear outside the house, and out of the way. And, a really nice touch is to equip the garage with an automatic garage door opener. Renters will love this feature, especially if it’s raining or snowing!

By giving your renters the ability to get outside and enjoy the surroundings of your vacation rental home, the more they will appreciate your attention to their needs. The more you can do to make your vacation rental home stand out above the rest, the more renters you will have time and again. Renters appreciate amenities, and the more you can provide, the better the payoff will be for you!
