Bedroom &
Bathroom
by Robin

Comfort is key when
it comes to vacation accommodations, and it is no
different for those who are staying in a resort or
renting a vacation home. That is why it is your job as
the vacation rental homeowner to provide the best
comfort possible, especially in two of the most
important rooms of the house, the bedroom and the
bathroom.
Bedrooms
When outfitting the bedrooms of your vacation rental
home, think about what you like about or would like to
have for your own bedroom. Top on the list is no doubt a
good-quality, comfortable mattress. When it comes to a
comfortable mattress, it’s probably best to choose
something on the slightly firmer side, which will
provide better back support and sounder sleep for your
guests.
Depending on the type of bedroom, you have options
regarding mattress size. For the master bedroom, a queen
mattress is always a good choice. It provides plenty of
room for a couple to sleep, and the bedding is still
pretty affordable. But, a king size mattress is always a
good selling point! For secondary bedrooms, you can add
a full or queen size bed, or even two twin beds, in
order to accommodate kids.
The next most important thing to a comfortable mattress
is a comfortable pillow. Purchase firm and plush pillows
that provide good neck support. Avoid down-stuffed
pillows, because many people have allergic reactions to
those.
Finally, when outfitting the beds in your vacation
rental home, buy good-quality linens. Opt for a thread
count of 300 or higher, they will last longer and retain
their softness better. You can find great deals on sheet
sets or a “bed in a bag” that includes everything:
comforter, pillowcases, fitted and flat sheets, even a
dust ruffle. They come in every mattress size, and in
numerous colors and patterns.
The bedrooms of your vacation rental home should have
ample closet space. But if they do not, invest in some
pieces that provide renters for storage of clothing,
shoes, and even luggage. They will appreciate being able
to unpack, and they will feel like they are at home.
Make sure the beds have at least one nightstand, and
place an alarm clock on it for an added touch.
It is up to you whether you want to add a television in
one or more of the bedrooms. It is a nice extra feature,
but more than likely your guests with be too tired at
the end of their fun-filled days to watch too much
television in bed!
The bedrooms should also be equipped with good lighting.
This is important for reading and getting dressed for
evenings out. You might want to consider a ceiling
fan/light combo. This will provide ample overhead
lighting, along with good air circulation and
comfortable sleeping temperatures as well.
Bathrooms
The bathrooms of your vacation rental home should be
clean and appointed with a few basics, so that your
renters are able to feel right at home away from home!
The bathrooms should have clean toilets, tubs, showers,
and sinks, with all fixtures working properly. It might
be a good idea to have a local plumber’s number on hand,
for maintenance purposes and in order to handle any
emergencies that will inevitably arise from time to
time. Any tile should be relatively free of mildew and
mold, as well as cracks, and the tubs should be equipped
with non-skid surfaces. This will prevent any of your
guests from slipping and getting injured.
Provide some storage space in the bathroom for your
guests. A few baskets and even a medicine cabinet will
be sufficient space for them to store any toiletries
they bring. Also have an ample supply of towels,
washcloths, and hand towels for them to use, as well as
rugs on the floor. Add some silk flowers to the
countertop for a friendly touch. Tie the colors together
for a festive theme, and you will have a bathroom that
will rival your guests’ own home!
Make sure that the bathroom is equipped with a plunger,
and maybe even some liquid drain opener. This will
prevent small plumbing problems from becoming big ones!
And as a little something extra, it’s nice to stock the
bathroom with some spare shampoo, soap, toothpaste, a
few new toothbrushes, and even shaving cream. These
things can be bought for little extra money, and your
guests will love the “hotel” feeling.
Going the extra mile in your vacation rental home will
make your renters feel like they are in their very own
second home. The more that you can do to make your
guests feel welcome and comfortable, the more likely
they are to rent from you again, and they will be more
likely pass the word on to friends and family about what
a great vacation home they rented!
